"Syllabus Treasure Hunt"
(for
CCT692)
This is an important exercise. It helps no-one if you find yourself confused in week 10 about where to find instructions, but you haven't spent time to systematically get acquainted with the course materials and/or haven't asked questions to help you -- and probably others -- clarify things.
Q: Why not spend time in class going over the materials? A: It is more effective for each student to do this at their own pace and then spend precious class time on specific, focused questions.
- Print out and check off in left margin when you have completed the item.
- Get set-up on your computer, with bookmarks to the course syllabus, folders/directories for course work, etc.
- Review the syllabus and links, printing out material not in the compilation that you want to have in a hard copy.
- How many assignments can you miss and still get an "automatic B+"?
- What is the difference between submitting an assignment and gettting "OK/RNR"?
- What is the difference between the Overview of ASSESSMENT & REQUIREMENTS on the syllabus and the webpage " Assessment and Timing of Assignments and Tasks"?
- Where do you find instructions for any particular assignment, e.g., Key Article?
- Print out assignment check-list.
- Read and indicate that you have taken note of the completion contract at the end of the assignment check-list.
- Download a previous student's report that interests you (using password from instructor).
- Sign up for first conference
- What should happen at this conference?
- What does "Research workbook and organization" refer to?
- When will this be perused?
- Send a question to the course email listserv about something related to the course materials that you need clarified.
- What role does the course wikipage have in this course?
- Decide if you want to access course materials online or printout everything.
- If the former, create a bookmark to the table of contents for this syllabus and key online materials.
- If the latter, organize the compilation (e.g., with dividers in a binder, or with tabs) so you can quickly locate any section.
- What is a treasure hunt question that would be useful to include for the next time the course is taught?
