Student I.D. and E-Mail Address
A Student I.D. is a photo identication card given through the university. With
the I.D., a student can use the resources at the Healey Library as well as take
advantage of the benefits offered through student life. A Student I.D. can be
obtained on the fourth floor of the Wheatley Building during their hours of
operation.
Every UMass Boston graduate students may get an e-mail address (free of charge)
by applying for a VAX (a.k.a. umbsky.cc.umb.edu) account. To setup a UMass
email account take your student ID during library hours to the computer area in
the upper level of the Healey Library.
If you want to use UMass as your link into the internet (a.k.a. Internet
Service Provider), then go to the Help Desk in Computer Services in the Science
building and ask to set up a PPP account. You'll need to know the operating
system of your home computer, the speed of your modem, and your UMass email
account (user name) and password. Make sure you get the PPP software and
persist in asking for help until you have the PPP software working.
If you don't have a home computer or don't have a modem to hook up to the
internet, you can still access your email via the WWW at your local library,
cybercafes, etc. One way is to get a free web based email account (e.g., at
www.hotmail.com) and the other is to access your UMass account using a web
based interface (e.g., webinbox.com). Mail can be automatically forwarded from
your UMass account. Ask the Help Desk in Computer Services to help you set up
forwarding.
We urge you to get an email address as soon as you are admitted to the Program
so you can receive up to date information from the Program and professors in
your courses, and use it to contact CCT faculty and fellow students.
