hangoutyoutube

Preparation
Youtube channel settings: unlisted; standard license.

Set yourself up in a space where there is an ethernet connection for computer 1 and where therewill be minimal background noise. Do a test hangout on air to establish the right sound level for the distance you will be sitting away from Computer 1.

Create a session wikipage in which all the youtubes and other materials to show are embedded. Mark up notes about when the display will need to be enlarged, scrolling will be needed etc.

On a MAC, cmd[ takes you back a screen, cmd+ makes the print on screen larger, cmd0 takes you back to normal display size, shift-cmd-F toggles in and out of presentation mode.
On a wikipage ?f=print added at the end of the URL eliminates menus etc.

Computer 1 (to run hangout and record it, receive chats from participants, etc.)
Computer 2 (to check that hangout is working ok, as backup & to play copyrighted youtubes not included in the recording)
External speaker positioned a little over 3" from external mic (or else computer positioned so no minimal input will come to built in mic other than built in speaker output).
Notes should be laid out so as to minimize noise from page turning.

If also displaying to an in-room large screen, connect this computer to the screen. Mute audio output.
Open browser to plus.google.com, then 2nd tab to session wikipage
Open browser to plus.google.com (set input from USB mic/camera), then 2nd tab to session wikipage
Initiate Hangout on air

Invite g+ community where anyone who you want to be able to see the streamed version (live or afterwards) can click on the post to view. In invite message, include starttime, title, theme, link to session wikipage, and ask viewers to open a 2nd tab to the session wikipage.

Start (hangout).
Invite anyone (via private g+ community) who you want to participate in hangout & yourself (for 2nd computer). All viewers asked to open a 2nd tab on their browser to the wikipage for the session and to mute mic when not talking.

Accept invite on hangouts ("You are in a video call"), not on notification that a hangout is about to begin.
Mute audio input.
Use cameraman app to specify Broadcast large video and mute others when they join

Screenshare to session wikipage with ?f=print option

Start broadcast when you are ready

(Audio output will come from this computer (except when showing copyrighted material--see below), but that shouldn't a big issue in a small room.
(Visual output will go from hangout to screen. Use presentation mode if that clears clutter.)
For showing copyrighted material:

Click on the link to open the video, but do not start the video. Ask everyone to switch to 2nd tab, click on the appropriate link and watch it for themselves. Mute audio input.

Tab to the wikipage for the session, click on the appropriate link, unmute audio output, then start video.

At end of video, mute audio output from 2nd computer, return to wikipage, then to hangout screen.
Return to session wikipage, unmute audio input, and continue broadcast.

After ending broadcast, check that the youtube is unlisted.

To explore whether this passes muster with copyright bots: Record hangout on air and stream it only to a private g+ community. Include the copyrighted videos in that recording/streaming. Edit the recording to trim out the copyrighted material, add the corresponding links to the description of this new youtube, and post it publically.

Also to explore: Install soundflower to feed audio output of computer 1 to audio input. (Specify this in system preferences as well as in Hangout settings. Make sure input setting is not at the max [because this leads to poor sound quality.] [Note: Can't seem to open soundflower to use controls, such as play output to headphones as well, but that's not essential.) Use computer 2 for sound to class. Use it also with screenshare of wikipage on computer 1 & mic mute/unmute on computer 2 for speech sections.
Use HDMI for video feed to in-class monitor but not USB mic & wideview camera. (Note: broadcast version of youtube and version on monitor will be less sharp than youtube on Computer 1. Compare soundflower sound quality to the indirect system above.)
