Location: Old Fire Station, Water Street, Woods Hole MA, USA
Accommodation:
- While in Woods Hole -- in Sleepy Hollow motel, per night: c. $95 single occupant; $50 each for double occupancy - specify preferences.
- Accommodation in Boston before or after the workshop: approx. $100 per room at Comfort Inn, Morrissey Boulevard (booked c/o University), or $80 per room (single or joint) at a downtown Boston hotel booked yourself using priceline.com.
- For even cheaper accommodation, if you can tolerate disturbances of a dormitory in a hostel, consider Boston Hostel.
Ground Travel:
Subject to confirmation according to people's different travel plans, we try to arrange pickup by workshop rental car (either at airport or at UMass Boston, outside campus center). To get from airport to UMass on your own, take the silverline (a bus) to South Station where the subway (redline) takes you to JFK/UMass stop, then a free shuttle bus. You need to buy a "charlie ticket" ($2) from a machine in the airport terminal.

Bus to Woods Hole, from Boston (Logan) airport c. $55 round trip; from South Station, c. $45 round trip
Or via your own means.
Air travel:
Send your arrival and departure times as soon as you know them so we can coordinate ground transportation and accommodation.
Meals:
Tea/coffee and pastries will also be available for breakfast at the Old Fire Station (or participants can pay for breakfast on your own in Woods Hole; around $5). Meals (lunch & dinner) and Refreshments (tea breaks, snacks, dinner beverages) covered by workshop registration.
Registration:
Sliding scale--$125 (for those with low incomes, lack of travel support) up to $300 (for those with a decent income, institutional/grant support, and above-average dinner and beverage consumption). (You decide where on the sliding scale you fit.)
Deposit--$100 (due within 2 weeks of notification of acceptance, by check to Peter Taylor or paypal to newssc11@gmail.com [please specify that it is for "Payment owed" under the "Personal" tab] or else a fee will be deducted by paypal). Balance payable one week before the workshop.
Internet Access and other Facilities:
Wireless internet access will be available at the motel and at the Old Fire Station. (The latter may be subject to limits on MB, so try to download any video, audio, web site pages and saved them locally ahead of time, reserving the wireless activity for emails/light browsing.)
Workshop will have a laptop, computer projector, black-and-white printer, flip charts, etc. but not an overhead projector.
If you do not bring a laptop, bring a flash drive of files you might want to work on or printout.
What to Pack:
Notebook.
Books to read aloud from or DVDs to show clips related to the workshop for one evening.
Beach walking shoes.
Anti-allergy medicines (May is high-allergy season).
Raincoat or waterproof jacket.
Hat to shade you from the sun.
Tasks to assist workshop organization (divided among participants)e.g., Buying breakfast and lunch supplies, milk, etc. each morning; Arranging dinners and beverages; Keeping meeting room tidy; Collate forms/paperwork, etc.
Financial Support:
The funding available to help get people to the workshop is modest, but we have managed to subsidize travel and accommodation in past years according to need (which favors graduate students and independent scholars, but does not count out those with regular positions but no travel budgets). And we are able to keep the meal expenses to a minimum at Woods Hole (and still eat well). Applicants should let us know what you need to be able to attend.
Subsidies may take the form of contributions to your Woods Hole accommodation and/or travel expenses. For travel reimbursements the following paperwork needs to be completed and submitted before the end of the workshop:
- W9 and an "Add Vendor" form
- your itinerary or receipt showing the ticket has been paid for
International visitors receiving travel reimbursement:
- Specify business when you complete your I94 for entry to the USA. For visitors not from "visa waiver" countries, apply for a business visa (B1).
- W8, W9 and a FOREIGN NATIONAL INFORMATION FORM (leave the places for Soc. Sec. Number blank) and give the organizer photocopies of:
your I94, the page with their name & photo from the passport and the page with the immigration stamp received when you enter the USA, and the visa waiver or BI visa.
Application process
Email to organizer by the specified deadline an application consisting of five parts:
- Name, Preferred emailing addresses, Telephone number, Affiliation, Education
- Research, teaching, institutional development, and other experience related to workshop theme and process (250-500 words)
- Selected relevant publications, courses, websites, and activities
- Request for subsidy of travel and accommodation, if needed
- Preference for single occupancy or double occupancy room
- (Optional) Suggestions for people to invite if spaces are available
The desired size for the workshops is 12-14 participants. Successful applicants will be notified within a month, by which time we will know whether there are funds for stipends and subsidies of travel and accommodation (see above).
Please confirm your participation by sending the $100 registration deposit (paypal to newssc11@gmail.com preferred [please specify that it is for "Payment owed" under the "Personal" tab]). If you do this promptly we can finalize the subsidies and extend the invitation to additional participants.
