Week10Discussion
Week 10: Questions for Discussion
(in reference to reading from Critical Multicultural Analysis of Children's Literature: Mirrors, Windows, and Doors)
With your group, discuss the following:
1. What stood out for you in this reading?
2. As a group, come up with 1 or 2 principles inspired by the reading (consider how we might approach the writing, reading, and/or engagement with children's literature based on what Botelho & Rudman discuss). (Recall that a principle expresses a strong belief and helps to guide actions or choices that we make).
3. How could expressions of multiculturalism in literature and the arts help to inform the way that we support young people to design their lives?
(It may help to use last week's short story, "
Mother or Monster?", as a point of reference. Consider
multiculturalism in the broad sense, including race, gender, religion, socioeconomics, etc.).
Also, if time, think of an example of when the younger you had to "design your own life". In what ways might have the outcome of that situation been influenced by the multicultural context around you?
